Wycombe Abbey International Schools, WAIS, are holistic, co-educational British boarding schools that run a hybrid China/ U.K. curriculum for Chinese families and expatriates. Our pupils, from 3 – 18 years, are within the China education system, receive a Xueji (学籍) from the China Education Bureau and attend universities overseas. We provide a challenging and safe environment where pupils develop into confident, critically thinking individuals equipped for a successful future.
The Development Manager is responsible for supporting, developing and securing deals to open new Wycombe Abbey International Schools (“WAIS”) through a combination of opportunistic and systemic business development activities. WAIS opens Kindergarten and Primary (K-6) schools or kindergarten through secondary schools (K-12) depending on the market environment and opportunity. K-6 schools should support enrolment between 700 – 1,000 students; K-12 schools should support enrolment between 1,500 – 2,500 students.
Responsibilities include:
Deal pipeline
Present new deal analytical reports with clear decision criteria and requirements to the senior leadership
Systemic
Identify key markets in which WAIS should target opening a new school
Leverage support from the BE Board, BE contacts and self-generated relationships to explore target markets for partnerships, land deals and building opportunities
Develop a deal pipeline workflow to segment deals into different categories of probability and resource allocation; identify clear go/ no-go decision criteria at each step in the pipeline workflow
Opportunistic
Work with the BE senior leadership team to follow up on potential deals brought to BE by outside parties
Clearly categorize opportunistic deals in the pipeline workflow and make recommendations to the Development Director on go/ no-go decisions
Prioritize workflow and resources on deals with the highest probability of closing that meet BE’s value proposition criteria
Negotiation, deal signing and deal closing
Be part of the team that negotiates and signs new school deals
Assist in financial modeling of deal opportunities
Maintain close relationships with potential partners and monitor their compliance with deal terms
Identify areas of non-compliance and/ or schedule delays and recommend solutions
Be part of the team that verifies deal terms have been completed
New School support requirements
Assist in successfully obtaining education and commercial licenses and other support approvals needed to open a new school
Assist in coordinating support requirements with deal partners and local government officials
Develop a partnership and government relationship database with contact history
Partnership and government relationships
WAIS business development partners are overwhelmingly district governments and property developers, an ability to communicate respectfully and firmly with senior partners is a must
Maintain ongoing relationships with private partners and government officials needed to advance new school deals
Conduct relationship maintenance activities for deals that have already been completed
KEY DELIVERABLES
• Generate new school deal opportunities;
• Based on existing templates prepare market analysis reports, financial models, WAIS introduction materials, draft contracts and other support materials as required
• Lobby local government officials on the benefits of supporting a Minban school with internationalized curriculum in their area;
• Assist in closing new school deals.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS
A successful candidate:
• Deal workflow, prioritization and negotiating experience;
• A track record of developing and maintaining high level professional business development relationships;
• Has the right combination of communication and interpersonal skills necessary for working effectively and positively with multiple internal and external stakeholders;
• Has strong financial modeling, writing and presentation skills;
• Is comfortable with MS Office, expert Excel use, in addition to web-based tools;
• Is fluent in Chinese and English.
