English Language Lecturers, 126,000-162,000 RMB (annual salary, depending on qualifications and experience) + 11,000 RMB in holiday bonuses + other benefits
Background
Dongguan University of Technology (DGUT) was founded in April 1992 and was ratified by the Ministry of Education in March 2002 to start conferring bachelor’s degrees. Dr Yang Zhenning, Nobel Laureate in Physics, is its honorary president. DGUT is the first university in Dongguan, with two campuses – Songshan Lake campus and Guancheng campus – and around 15,000 students. DGUT is working hard to establish itself as an important base for training talent and original scientific research, as well as to become a forerunner in the transformation of Chinese technical education.
The Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (CNAM) in Paris, founded in 1794, is a doctoral-degree-granting higher education establishment and grande école in engineering operated by the French government, which is dedicated to providing education and conducting research for the promotion of science and industry. With nearly 150 educational centres in France, and a presence in many other countries around the world, CNAM offers adults of all ages the tools they need in the workplace. Nearly 100,000 pupils, employees, students and job-seekers participate in the CNAM’s educational programmes every year.
As a result of a partnership agreement between DGUT and CNAM, the DGUT-CNAM Institute (DCI) was opened at DGUT’s Guancheng Campus in 2017. The DCI is based on the long history, mature model, and outstanding contributions of CNAM in the field of engineer training, combined with DGUT’s focus on the rapid development of science and engineering to serve the economic industry of Guangdong province. The DCI is the result of the integration and optimisation of education and teaching concepts from both China and France, which aims to prepare graduates for the global engineering requirements of the future.
Location
Dongguan is a famous modern manufacturing metropolis, awarded Tier 1 city status in 2017, which is located in Guangdong province in southern China (around 50 miles north of Hong Kong, 35 miles east of China’s third-largest city, Guangzhou). The city has previously been awarded ‘The Most Charming City in China’, and ‘The Most Economically Dynamic City in China’, and it is currently ranked 18th in Foreign Policy’s list of the most dynamic cities in the world. Dongguan is also recognised by the United Nations Environmental Programme as an ‘international garden city’, with five natural reserves, 10 forest parks, 13 wetland parks, and over 1,000 parks and greenways. The city is considered a home for Cantonese culture, and particularly for Cantonese opera. However, the population of the city is highly diverse, with around 75% of the population coming from other parts of China or overseas. The city has a subtropical climate, with an average temperature of 22 Celsius throughout the year. The average cost of living in Dongguan is much lower than in most western cities, as can be seen on this website – https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Dongguan-China.
Job Description
Students enrolled in the DCI are taught the majority of their classes in English, with the intention that they will study part of their degree in Paris on programmes taught by CNAM in English. The English Language Department is responsible for ensuring that the students are prepared for both the language and academic requirements of studying their major course of study (currently, mechanical engineering, software engineering, and communications engineering) in English, as well as preparing them to pass language examinations (CET/TOEIC).
Our students study in small classes (a maximum of 25 students) and benefit from one-to-one tutorials with staff frequently throughout the academic year. As well as focusing on improving their listening, speaking, writing, and reading, we also work on English to prepare them for academic life (e.g. report writing, presenting, research skills) and on the language that they will require to study within their chosen discipline.
All teaching materials are provided, which have been custom-written for the project, although we are always developing our courses and improving our programmes in response to student feedback and the strengths of our staff. You will be expected to teach 5-10 classes a week (class time is 1.5 hours), depending on requirements, while the remaining hours are free for curriculum development, research, preparing papers for publication, and tutorials.
As DCI grows, we are interested in bringing a range of academic staff into our department – ranging from new lecturers who are looking for a place to start their career, through to more experienced staff who can contribute to the shape our department takes in the future. We are a new institute, so there is considerable opportunity for professional development and progression, while working in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
We are currently seeking staff who would be available to start work on 1st September 2018 for a minimum of one year (contract is renewable, dependent on successful competition of annual performance review). Support will be provided in obtaining the relevant working Z-visa and in relocating to Dongguan. Early application is recommended to ensure there is sufficient time to prepare the necessary paperwork.
